About

Bright Shot

Bright Shot Photography specializes in eclectic, innovative candid style photography. We are located in the St. Louis metropolitan area and are available for any portrait need you may have, specializing in weddings, newborns, and children.

My Background

My name is Kara Proehl and I am professional photographer from St. Louis. I got my start in photography back in college, where I majored in electronic arts. My emphasis was in audio production, and I even spent some time working at a recording studio in Nashville. The work was interesting, but the solitary indoor work atmosphere and high profile clients quickly helped me to learn that what I really loved was just simple real life: families, laughing, and relationships (and sunshine!).  I have been photographing professionally with my business for over 2 years. Prior to Bright Shot Photography, I worked as an assistant with other master photographers in the area and learned how to shoot from my mom, who often seconds with me at weddings.  I especially enjoy natural light and motion photography in addition to portrait photography.

My Style

My style of photography is very personal and real (organic, candid, “photojournal-istic” if you like) and laid back. My goal is to get the best shot in the most fun and discreet way. Sometimes that means hanging out with new parents at their home, trying to make their baby laugh. Or sometimes it means quietly moving about an old stone church to prepare to capture the perfect angle of a couple’s first kiss as husband and wife.  I consider my job to be physically and mentally demanding and therefore believe staying in the best shape I can, body and mind, is a requirement and a responsibility to my clients. I am an active member of both NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) and PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and continue both an online and practical photography education. You can read the PPA member’s Code of Ethics by clicking HERE to see what kind of standards I hold myself and my photographers to. I don’t have a favorite subject to take pictures of – every session is a new experience and I can roll with just about anything – from pizza guys stealing my parking spot at Kiener Plaza on a fast paced wedding shot, to kids afraid of spider webs at an outdoor session location. It is ALWAYS an honor to join your family in whichever phase of life you are currently in to help you capture those memories of the moment.

Me
When I am not behind the camera (or computer!) I enjoy working out, being with my doggies, and spending time with my family.  I love to eat, especially sushi, steak, and anything chocolate, and even better with a glass of wine and if someone else cooks for me!  I am a TLC junkie and love catching an episode of Say Yes to the Dress or Four Weddings just to see what girls are wearing and what couples are doing at their weddings.  I have slowly overcome my fear of flying in the last few years and I enjoy traveling and seeing new places.  I will travel for destination weddings and hope to make a habit of it in the future!
